Departing Waterloo Place we travel via the New Town pointing out the houses associated with Sir Walter Scott the writer of The Waverley novels, Ivanhoe, Lady of the Lake, Rob Roy, and The Bride of the Lammermoor to name but a few, Kenneth Grahame the writer of Wind in the Willows, Alexander Graham Bell the man credited with the invention of the telephone, Lord Joseph Lister the pioneer of antiseptic surgery, James Young Simpson the pioneer of anesthetics and Robert Louis Stevenson seeing the gardens he played in as a small boy, these gardens have a pond and an island.
We then take you deeper into the New Town via Stockbridge where we can hear all about a lady called Dora Noyce, we pass by Fettes College. Fettes is considered the Eton of Scotland and has associations with Tony Blair and James Bond and possibly Hogwarts the school of Harry Potter. Our journey continues to South Queensferry via Dalmeny Parish Church circa 1130 one of the best preserved Norman churches in the UK. At South Queensferry a charming old fishing village, we can see the Hawes Pier featured in the novel Kidnapped and the inn where Robert wrote much of the novel, from there we can see the famous Forth Rail Bridge 1883 to 1890 one of the engineering marvels of the world. After a break we take the foreshore road back to town and the port of Newhaven, passing by the Lauriston Estate and castle once owned by John Law the murderer who escaped to France and became a major financial player, founder of the Bank of France and the inventor of paper money.
